Class 44 Conversion with Dynadrive.
Here are a few photographs of a project that I started a few years ago and only recently completed. Originally a Mainline Class 45, I converted it to a Class 44 with the A1 kit. However it still had the original Mainline motor, not the best runner in my fleet by any stretch of the imagination! To achieve better running, comparable to my other Bachmann Peaks, I could either transplant a Bachmann Peak chassis underneath (a straight drop in) or try the newly released Mainline Class 45 Dynadrive conversion. As I already had a few other Dynadrive locos, I was already converted!
The Dynadrive system gives an unrivalled experience when driving your locomotives. It consists centrifugal clutch, a heavy flywheel mounted in ball race bearings and a high precision worm gearbox in a purpose deigned motor bogie specific to the prototype. When power is applied the motor begins to idle and when enough power is applied the clutch partially engages which allows the loco to move away very smoothly and slowly. The flywheel allows the loco to glide for a significant distance after the power is turned off which is ideal to overcome those dead spots and dirty track. I can only recommend that you try this system as it is easier to demonstrate than describe and is far better than can be imagined!
The pictures below hopefully give a taste of the completed project. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of this in progress as I finished this over a year ago.
